Architectural Studies Fact Sheet
SIUC Advantages: The architecture program offers a well-rounded, realistic approach to education, which is heavily influenced by the profession. In order to assure the education maintains close contact with the profession, the program has a long-established advisory committee, which is comprised of practicing architects representing various size firms from the state and Midwest region. Graduates of the program are prepared to immediately become productive employees or to pursue graduate degrees.
Class Sizes: Class sizes in the major will vary depending on the format of the course. Lecture courses will range from 25 to 125 students. Studio courses will range from a high of 25 to 30 students in the lower-level courses down to 10 to 18 students in the upper-level courses.
Faculty-to-Student Ratio: 1 to 20
Faculty: All faculty have extensive education and experience backgrounds related to their assigned teaching areas. Currently there are ten tenured/tenure-track faculty members who are supported by a varying number of adjunct faculty members. All courses in the Architectural Studies major are taught by faculty members. Graduate assistants are only used in supporting roles in the computer lab and in the resource library.
Job Outlook: For the last ten years, nearly 100% of all architecture graduates from SIUC have received a job offer or have been accepted into graduate programs at other institutions upon degree completion. The American Institute of Architecture Students has identified over one hundred career options for architecture graduates. Some of these options are: Facility Management, Construction Management, Sales, Government-related positions, Education, Planning, and Historic Preservation.
Employers of Recent Graduates: Graduates find jobs throughout the state of Illinois and across the United States. Upon request, a list of employers in your area will be provided.
Average Starting Salaries: According to the most recent publication by the American Collegiate Schools of Architecture, architectural interns typically start with an annual salary of $30,000 to $35,000. Project Managers typically earn $50,000 annually and partners in firms make $80,000 or more.
Graduate School Options: Approximately 40% of the SIUC architecture graduates apply for admission to Master of Architecture programs at other institutions. SIUC offers the Master of Architecture degree. Over the years, many of our graduates have traditionally transferred to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Other institutions include: Universities of Michigan, Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Arizona State University, Ball State University, Washington University, Pratt Institute of Technology, and Rhode Island School of Design.
Student Services & Activities: Honors Program, Faculty Advisors, Tutoring Services for first-year students, Workshops, Guest Lectures, Travel-Study Programs, Student Organizations.
Financial Support: Currently, the Architectural Studies program offers a limited number of scholarships available primarily to upper-level students. The number and size of the scholarships varies from year-to-year. SIUC offers a large scholarship program and has an extensive student work program available to students who can demonstrate financial need. A limited number of profession- related student employment opportunities exist with local architecture firms, the Campus Architect's office and the department.
